Sadras

Sadras is town located along the Coromandel Coast and was previously known as Chaduranga Patinam. Sadras is a fort town and one of the first naval battles was fought off the shores of this town. It is situated 70 km from Chennai towards the South. Sadras was Dutch colony from the 17th century. One of the main attractions in Sadras is the fort and it is among the most popular places in the area. The fort was built by the Dutch and served as commercial trade center. The fort was won by the British in the 19th century and there are many British and Dutch influences that can be seen in the area. The Archeological Survey of India is responsible for maintaining the fort and they are taking efforts to renovate it to its former glory. Sadras was also known for its fine muslin cloth and this was produced extensively during the colonial period for export. There are many tombs that can be found in and around the town of Sadras. These are a good place to visit. Beaches in the town are relatively untouched by tourism and are among the cleanest along the coast. There are many small fishing villages that can be seen along the coast.
