Amirthaghateswarar Shrine

Amritaghateswarar Shrine is one of the most splendid temples in South India. Located in Thirukuddaiyur, this temple has a sprawling 11 acre complex, exuding spearing towers and spacious mandapams. Though not much is known about its consecration, it is believed to be from the 11th century. The presiding deity of the shrine is Lord Shiva, making it one of the eight most sacred places dedicated to Him. As per mythology, this is the place where Lord Shiva protected Markandeya from Yama (Lord of Death). In effect, Lord Siva is also known as Mrityumjaya, the one who vanquished death. Due to this, the temple is visited by couples beyond the age of 60 or 80. Devotees also throng the site during the festivals of Brahmotsavam in Chithirai (April-May) and the Shankhabishekam in Kartikai (November-December).
